Neue Stadtschulen

Neue Stadtschulen in St. Gallen and Zürich, designed by Raumreaktion, revolutionise education through spaces for autonomous learning where teachers become coaches and students become learning partners. These progressive high schools feature co-learning labs with Big Tables for group sessions and Mute Flow panels for acoustic comfort, creating environments that balance independent study with collaborative work.

Co-learning labs replace traditional classrooms

The co-learning lab forms the heart of both schools, offering varied zones from protected focus areas to dynamic collaboration spaces. Big Modular Tables anchor the group work zones, providing surfaces for brainstorms and team projects where learning partners gather around shared challenges. The St. Gallen location spans a new building with meeting rooms, coaching rooms, an art atelier and library, while the Zürich location integrates more compactly into an existing building. Both locations eliminate traditional classroom boundaries, allowing students to choose their learning environment based on their current needs.

Acoustic solutions for self-directed learning

Mute Flow panels manage sound levels across the open co-learning spaces, essential when multiple groups work simultaneously without classroom walls. These acoustic solutions create calm within the larger space, allowing focused individual study alongside team discussions. The modularity and colour options available in both Big Tables and Mute Flow panels align with Raumreaktion's vision of sustainable design that respects both current users and future generations. This furniture selection supports the schools' philosophy of self-initiative over external control, providing students with the tools to shape their own learning experience.
